Best router table: a woodworker feeding a board past a router bit on a router table

A router table turns a hand-held router into a small shaper: you move the wood instead of the router, which makes narrow parts, molding, raised panels, rail-and-stile doors and repeat joinery safer and more accurate. For most home shops, the best router table is the Kreg PRS2100: a quiet benchtop table with a full-size insert plate and a fast-locking aluminum fence. The Bosch RA1181 has the biggest benchtop top, the SKIL SRT1039 is the budget pick, and the Kreg PRS1045 is the full-size floor system for a shop that routes every week.

Below are six picks, from portable to floor-standing, a comparison table, short reviews from the makers’ specifications, and what to look for in the top, insert plate, fence and dust collection. Still choosing the router that goes under it? See my best router for woodworking picks.

Best Router Tables: Reviews

Every pick could be ordered on Amazon when I checked it. Cast-iron tables and table-saw extension wings are left out: they’re sold mostly by specialist retailers, and a saw wing only makes sense if you own a matching saw.

Best Router Table Overall

Kreg built the PRS2100 to give a benchtop table the parts that matter on a full-size one: a stiff top, a proper insert plate and a fence that adjusts quickly. The 16″ x 24″ top is an edge-banded particle core with a high-pressure laminate Micro-Dot skin that work slides across easily, and it sits 16″ high on a stamped-steel base with rubber feet. Kreg says that combination tests quieter than most enclosed router tables. The 3/8″ x 9-1/4″ x 11-3/4″ insert plate supports large routers, levels from below and comes with three Level-Loc rings (25, 30 and 54 mm; the 30 mm ring takes Porter-Cable style guide bushings). The anodized-aluminum fence has quarter-turn locking levers, independent sliding faces, a bit guard, a dust port and jointing rods for edge jointing. It’s in the mid-range tier.

Best Large Benchtop Router Table

The RA1181 has the largest working surface of the benchtop tables here: an aluminum top 27″ wide and 18″ deep, which Bosch chose for durability and portability. The aluminum mounting plate is pre-drilled for a range of routers and, with many common routers, allows above-table height adjustment; three insert rings come with it. The extra-tall aluminum fence has adjustable MDF faceplates, two featherboards attach to the fence and table, and a 2-1/2″ port takes a standard vacuum hose. You also get a starter pin and guard for curved work, outfeed shims for edge jointing, a storage pocket, a cord wrap and a power-cord lock. It weighs 30 lb and opens to 3-5/8″ at the fence. It’s in the mid-range tier; on Amazon it ships with a delivery lead time.

Best Router Table for Dust Control

The RA1171 encloses the router in a cabinet under a 25-1/2″ x 15-7/8″ laminated top, which Bosch says helps stability, storage and dust management. It has two dust ports, one at the fence and one at the cabinet, so chips that fall through the plate get collected too. Like the RA1181 it uses a pre-drilled aluminum mounting plate with three insert rings and above-table height adjustment for many routers, an extra-tall aluminum fence with adjustable MDF faceplates, two featherboards, a clear guard and a starter pin. The base has four predrilled holes for screwing it down and a flat extension for clamping to a bench. It weighs 35 lb and stands 14.5″ tall. It’s in the mid-range tier.

Best Portable Router Table

The RA1141 is the table to carry. It arrives preassembled, its legs fold for storage and hold accessories, and Bosch’s Easy Click mount lets the router attach and detach in seconds with no plate leveling. The top is 26″ x 16-1/2″ of laminated MDF, with laminated MDF faceplates on a tall fence, two featherboards, a miter gauge, a bit-height gauge for setup, and a starter pin and guard for curves. It has dust collection, opens to 3-5/8″ at the fence and 3-1/4″ at the throat, and weighs 33 lb. It sits in the lower mid-range tier.

Best Budget Router Table

The SRT1039 is the lowest price tier here and still has features the others charge for. SKIL fits an above-the-table router lift so you change bit height from on top, and a dual-sided bit storage case built into the table. The top is 26″ x 16″ MDF with an aluminum miter-gauge slot and mounting plate, the 24″ fence has adjustable MDF faceplates, and two featherboards, a miter gauge, three inserts and a starter pin come in the box. SKIL says the router clamp fits most major router brands; the Amazon listing names SKIL’s RT1322-00 and RT1323-00 routers, so check your router’s fit before you buy. SKIL doesn’t list a dust port.

Best Full-Size Router Table

When the router table becomes a main machine, you want a floor-standing system, and the PRS1045 is Kreg’s complete one. It combines the 24″ x 32″ Precision Router Table Top, a 1″ particle core under high-pressure laminate with steel reinforcing struts; the Precision Router Table Fence, a 36″ T-square fence with a micro-adjust wheel and independent sliding faces; and a heavy-gauge steel stand that adjusts from 31″ to 39″ tall, with levelers for uneven floors. The insert plate is the same 3/8″ x 9-1/4″ x 11-3/4″ plate with Level-Loc rings as the benchtop model, and it fits Kreg’s PRS5000 router lift. Kreg gives a 3-year limited warranty. It’s a premium-tier purchase; casters are sold separately.

How I Chose These Router Tables

I looked at the router tables sold on Amazon today from established brands and picked one for each kind of shop: the best all-rounder, the largest benchtop, the best for dust, the most portable, the cheapest worth buying and a full-size floor system. I left out unbranded tables with no maker specifications and tables with thin MDF tops that sag around the router. I don’t show customer ratings or prices. For how I pick products across the site, see how I choose.

How to Choose a Router Table

Benchtop or Floor-Standing

A benchtop table sits on your workbench and goes on a shelf afterwards. It’s the right choice for most home shops and for occasional table work: edge profiles, small moldings, slots and joinery on drawer-size parts. A floor-standing table, like the Kreg PRS1045, has a larger top, a taller fence and the mass to run big panel-raising bits smoothly. Buy one when the router table becomes a machine you use every week.

The Top: Size, Flatness and Surface

The top must stay flat around the router, which hangs from it. Aluminum (Bosch RA1181) and laminated particle core or MDF over a steel frame (Kreg) both work; thin unsupported MDF can sag over time. Size sets the work you can support: 16″ x 24″ is enough for most parts, while long moldings and panels are easier on 27″ or 32″ of top. A laminate surface lets the work slide with less friction.

Insert Plate and Rings

The router bolts to an insert plate that drops into the top. A stiff, standard-size plate, like Kreg’s 3/8″ x 9-1/4″ x 11-3/4″ aluminum plate, fits most routers and accepts a router lift later. Reducing rings close the opening around small bits so narrow work can’t tip in; the 30 mm Kreg ring also takes Porter-Cable style guide bushings. Bosch’s RA1141 uses its own Easy Click mount instead, which is quick but narrows the choice of routers.

Fence

A good fence is straight, locks without shifting and has two faces you can slide toward the bit, so the opening is no wider than it needs to be. Tall fences support work on edge, and split fences with an outfeed shim let you joint edges like a small jointer. A dust port behind the bit does most of the dust collection on a router table.

Height Adjustment and Router Lifts

Raising the bit from under the table is the most annoying part of table routing. Some routers adjust from above the table: the Bosch MRC23EVSK’s fixed base and the Triton TRA001 both do. Otherwise, a router lift such as the Kreg PRS5000 adds above-table adjustment down to 1/64″, but it costs about as much as a mid-size router.

Dust Collection

Routing on a table throws fine chips at the fence and under the plate. Look for a port at the fence at least, and an enclosed cabinet with a second port, like the Bosch RA1171, if dust is your main complaint. Connect it to a shop vacuum or a collector: my guide to dust collection for woodworking tools covers which one to use.

💡 Pro Tip: Feed Right to Left, With Featherboards

On a router table the bit spins counterclockwise as you look down, so feed the work from right to left along the fence, against the rotation. Featherboards hold the board against the fence and table, and push blocks keep your hands clear on small parts. The feed-direction diagram in how to use a router shows why.

Which Router Goes in a Router Table?

The best table router is a mid-size or large router with a 1/2″ collet, variable speed and, ideally, above-table height adjustment. A two-base kit works well: the fixed base stays bolted under the table and the motor moves to the plunge base for hand-held jobs. A compact or trim router fits only small tables or plates made for it and limits you to 1/4″ bits. For specific models, see my best router for woodworking list, where the Triton TRA001 and Bosch MRC23EVSK are the table-friendly picks.

🏆 The Verdict

The best router table for most home shops is the Kreg PRS2100: quiet, precise and built around a full-size insert plate. For the largest portable top, the Bosch RA1181; for dust, the cabinet-style Bosch RA1171; to carry to site, the folding Bosch RA1141. On a budget, the SKIL SRT1039, and when the table becomes a main machine, the floor-standing Kreg PRS1045.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Which router table is better, Bosch or Kreg?+
They suit different shops. Kreg’s PRS2100 has the more universal 3/8″ x 9-1/4″ x 11-3/4″ insert plate, Level-Loc rings and a quick-locking fence with sliding faces. Bosch’s tables give you a bigger top for the money, featherboards in the box and, on the RA1171, two dust ports. For precision and router choice, Kreg; for size and accessories, Bosch.
Is it worth buying a router table?+
Yes, once you rout narrow parts, molding, doors or many identical pieces. Moving the wood past a fixed bit is safer and more repeatable than balancing a router on a thin edge, and it makes jobs like rail-and-stile doors and raised panels practical. For occasional edge profiles, a hand-held router is enough.
What is the best size router table for woodworkers?+
A top of about 16″ x 24″ handles most furniture parts and fits a home shop; that’s the Kreg PRS2100’s size. If you rout long moldings or wide panels, 27″ x 18″ (Bosch RA1181) or a 24″ x 32″ floor table (Kreg PRS1045) supports the work better. Bigger tops need more storage space.
What is the best router table for beginners?+
A benchtop table with a fence, featherboards and a starter pin in the box. The SKIL SRT1039 is the low-cost choice and adds an above-table lift, especially if you own a SKIL router. The Bosch RA1141 comes preassembled with a miter gauge, and the Kreg PRS2100 is the one to grow into.
Do I need a router lift?+
Not to start. A lift makes height changes faster and finer from above the table, which matters when you rout often or make fine joinery adjustments. If your router already adjusts above the table, like the Triton TRA001 or Bosch MRC23EVSK fixed base, you can skip the lift and spend the money on bits.
Can any router go in a router table?+
Most mid-size and large routers fit a standard insert plate, but check the hole pattern and the base diameter before buying. Plates like Kreg’s are pre-drilled or marked for many routers, while some tables, such as Bosch’s RA1141 Easy Click, accept a narrower list. Trim routers need a small plate or a dedicated trim router table.

Conclusion

Pick a router table by how often you’ll use it. A quiet benchtop table with a standard plate and a good fence, like the Kreg PRS2100, suits most shops; a floor system is worth it once table routing becomes everyday work. Pair it with a 1/2″ collet router, feed right to left, and keep the opening around the bit small. Questions about fitting your router? Ask in the comments.
