The BDEQS15C is a little palm grip sheet sander that is as simple and inexpensive as they come. It features a decently built body with a comfortable grip design, a dust-sealed power switch and a built-in dust collector. It weighs 2.7 lbs making it fairly easy to handle, and the 1.5 AMP motor can take on simple sanding tasks without issue. Although I’d love to see a sturdier body and more features on the BDEQS15C, it’s still one of the most affordable palm sanders I’ve ever seen and for the price tag it’s a solid machine. Great entry-level pick.

After my beloved Speed-Bloc became unavailable to buy, I had to find a suitable replacement for people who wanted one — it had to have that same famous quality, size and built-to-last construction. After all this time, I found it: the Makita BO4556K. It’s even got a bit more power with a 2 AMP motor (versus the Speed-Bloc’s 1.2 AMP) that puts out the same impressive 14,000 OPM. The size is the same — the classic 1/4 sheet — and the body, even with a different design, maintains that comfortable feel, tight grip and easy-on-the-arms vibration. As a bonus, it has a fantastic dust bag that works like a charm. I’ll tell you — as a die-hard fan of the Speed-Bloc, I was almost sure no other 1/4 palm sander would come close. After trying a handful of similar sanders I was always let down in one way or another, until this one. I made sure to sand and finish a bench I was working on with it, and bit by bit it won me over. I can now honestly say this beast of a Makita deserves to replace the Speed-Bloc as my recommended sander. Excellent machine.
