Best benchtop jointer overall
A benchtop jointer flattens one face of a board and squares an edge to it, the step that has to happen before a thickness planer can make the board parallel and even. For most home shops, the best benchtop jointer is the Cutech 40160HB: a 6″ machine with a spiral cutterhead of two-sided carbide inserts and a 3-year warranty. If you work with wider boards, step up to an 8″ spiral model like the WEN JT833H or the cast-iron Wahuda 50180CC-WHD. And if you need both machines, a jointer and planer bundle is a more practical buy than the combination machines sold online.
Below are six picks, a comparison table, short reviews from the makers’ specifications, the jointer-planer combo question, and how to choose width, cutterhead and tables. If you’re still deciding which machine to buy first, read my jointer vs planer guide.

Best Benchtop Jointer Overall
Cutech’s 6″ jointer combines the two things that matter most on a small jointer: a spiral cutterhead with 12 two-sided tungsten carbide inserts and tables that let the board slide. The 2″ head spins at 11,000 RPM on a 10 A, 120V motor and takes up to 1/8″ per pass. Cutech lists aluminum tables of 30″ x 6-1/4″ with a Teflon coating, a 19-5/8″ x 4-3/8″ fence with stops at 90° and 135°, a 2-1/2″ dust port and a weight of 37.3 lb. Each carbide insert has two edges, and Cutech backs the machine with a 3-year limited warranty, the longest among the 6″ models here.

Best Value Benchtop Jointer
The JT630H puts a spiral head in the lowest tier on this page. WEN’s manual lists a 10 A motor, 12,000 RPM, 12 inserts on the spiral head, up to 1/8″ per pass (1/32″ recommended), a 30″ x 6-3/16″ table and a 4-1/4″ x 19-3/4″ fence that tilts from 90° to 135°. It has a 2-1/2″ dust port and weighs 36.8 lb, light enough to lift onto a bench. WEN’s inserts are high-speed steel rather than carbide, and the warranty is 2 years.

Best 8-Inch Benchtop Jointer
The JT833H fixes the two complaints about small jointers. Capacity grows to 8″ wide, and the 33″ table extends to 51″ for long boards. It has a 16-insert spiral cutterhead, the same 10 A motor at 12,000 RPM, and both 2-1/2″ and 4″ dust ports. WEN allows up to 1/8″ per pass and tells you to reduce the depth by 1/32″ for each inch of width over 6″. It weighs 55.1 lb and carries WEN’s 2-year warranty.

Best 8-Inch Jointer with Cast Iron Tables
Wahuda’s 8″ jointer adds cast iron and carbide to the 8″ format. The spiral cutterhead carries 16 four-sided carbide inserts at a fixed 12,000 RPM on a 10 A, 120V motor, with capacity of 8″ wide and 1/8″ deep. The cast iron tables measure 34″ end to end and extend to 51″ with pull-out extensions, the 4-3/8″ x 24″ aluminum fence tilts from 90° to 135°, and the 2-1/2″ port comes with a 4″ adapter. Wahuda says it weighs about 64 lb, and its warranty is 2 years for home use (1 year for commercial use).

Premium Helical Pick
The JET is the benchtop jointer built most like a stationary machine. Its listing describes a true helical cutterhead with 14 indexable four-sided carbide blades, a 1 HP, 15 A motor turning the head at 10,000 RPM, and cast iron tables and fence. The fence tilts both ways to 45° with locking stops, an internal blower moves dust and chips away from the motor and cutterhead, and the toggle switch has a removable safety key. It sits in the top price tier on this page.

Best Jointer-Planer Combo
If you’re shopping for a jointer-planer combo, this bundle gets you both machines in one order. The JT630H above is paired with WEN’s PL1337 planer, which the listing describes with a spiral cutterhead of 26 staggered, rotatable HSS inserts, two feed speeds (26 ft/min for dimensioning and 16 ft/min for finishing) and capacity of 13″ wide and 6″ thick. Both machines use spiral heads, so tear-out stays low through the whole four-square milling sequence.
How I Chose These Jointers
I compared the benchtop jointers on sale on Amazon today from established tool brands and picked the ones that stand out for a reason: the best all-rounder, the best value, the best 8″ models, a premium helical machine and the most sensible way to buy a jointer and a planer together. I left out unbranded jointers with no maker specifications, Grizzly and Harbor Freight machines (not sold on Amazon), and the true jointer-planer combination machines listed on Amazon, which come from brands with no published specifications or in a price tier far above a home shop. I don’t show customer ratings or prices: each pick has a market tier, and the Amazon button shows the live price. For how I pick products across the site, see how I choose.
How to Choose a Benchtop Jointer
Width: 6″ or 8″
A jointer can only flatten a board as wide as its cutterhead. A 6″ model handles most furniture parts, face frames and edge jointing; an 8″ model takes tabletop boards and wider stock without ripping and regluing. The trade-off is depth of cut on wide boards: WEN’s manual for the JT833H tells you to reduce the depth by 1/32″ for each inch of width over 6″. If most of your lumber is 4/4 stock under 6″ wide, a 6″ jointer is enough.
Straight Knives, Spiral or Helical Heads
Every jointer on this page uses a segmented head: small square inserts set in a spiral (or a true helix, on the JET) instead of two or three long knives. Each insert takes a shearing cut, which reduces tear-out in figured grain and is quieter, and when an insert chips you rotate it to a fresh edge instead of replacing a full knife. Inserts come in two materials: high-speed steel (the WENs) and carbide (Cutech, Wahuda, JET), which stays sharp longer. Carbide inserts with two or four cutting edges are the low-maintenance choice.
Table Length and Material
The longer the tables, the straighter the edge you can joint on a long board. Benchtop jointers have tables around 30″ to 34″ long; the WEN JT833H and the Wahuda extend to 51″. Cast iron (Wahuda, JET) is heavier and resists vibration; aluminum (Cutech) is lighter, and Cutech coats its tables to reduce friction. For boards much longer than the tables, support the ends with roller stands.
Fence and Dust Port
A fence that locks at 90° and tilts for bevels is standard. The JET’s fence tilts both ways to 45° with locking stops; the others go from 90° to 135°. Every benchtop jointer here has a 2-1/2″ port, and the JT833H and Wahuda add a 4″ option. Jointers produce a lot of chips for their size, so plan on a dust collector rather than a shop vac; my guide to dust collection for woodworking tools covers the setup.
💡 Pro Tip: Light Passes, Guard On
WEN’s manual allows 1/8″ per pass and recommends 1/32″: several light passes flatten a warped board better than one heavy one. Keep the cutterhead guard in place, use push blocks on anything thinner or narrower than 3″, and don’t joint stock shorter than 8-1/8″.
Jointer-Planer Combo: Worth It?
A true combination machine joints on top and planes underneath with one cutterhead, which saves floor space in a small shop. The trade-off is changeover time between jointing and planing, and the good ones are full-size stationary machines in a much higher price tier. True combination machines, from 120V 12-inch models to 16-inch stationary machines, are compared in my guide to the best jointer planer combo. For most home shops, two benchtop machines bought together are the practical “combo”: the WEN JT630H jointer with the two-speed PL1337 planer, both with spiral heads, is sold as a single bundle. If you’d rather choose the planer separately, see my best thickness planer picks or the DeWalt DW735 vs DW734 vs Makita 2012NB comparison.
Is a Benchtop Jointer Worth It?
If you buy rough-sawn or reclaimed lumber, yes: a jointer is the fastest way to get one flat face and one square edge, and without them a thickness planer only copies the warp. If you buy surfaced boards (S4S or S2S) from a home center and glue up edges occasionally, a table saw jig or a planer sled covers most of what a jointer does, and a jointer can wait. A benchtop model is the right first jointer for a garage shop: it stores on a shelf, runs on a standard outlet and handles the board widths most furniture needs.
🏆 The Verdict
The best benchtop jointer for most shops is the Cutech 40160HB: carbide spiral head, coated tables and a 3-year warranty in a low tier. The WEN JT630H is the value pick, and for wider boards the WEN JT833H or the cast-iron Wahuda 50180CC-WHD. If you’re buying a jointer and a planer together, the WEN JT630H + PL1337 bundle is the sensible combo.

Conclusion
The best benchtop jointer is the one that matches your lumber. Mostly narrow boards: a 6″ spiral model like the Cutech 40160HB or the WEN JT630H. Tabletops and wide stock: an 8″ model with extending tables. Buying both machines at once: the WEN bundle. Whichever you choose, joint one face and one edge, then send the board through a planer, as explained in my jointer vs planer guide. Questions about your setup? Ask in the comments.
