Best Cordless Sander Overall · Best for Makita 18V LXT

The Makita XOB01Z is a cordless orbital sander I have used myself, and the one I recommend to most people. Its one-touch electronic control gives three speeds, 7,000, 9,500 and 11,000 OPM, on a 1/8″ random orbit, the larger of the two common orbit sizes, so it removes stock quickly and still finishes clean. Low speed is for veneer and edges, high speed for stock removal, and the middle setting covers most of what I sand. In my use a charge lasts around 40 minutes at low speed and about 20 at high speed, which is the real reason three speeds matter on a battery tool.

Makita adds a pad brake to stop the pad free-spinning when you lift off, a dust-sealed switch and bearing, and through-the-pad dust collection into a bag. It is a brushed motor, which is the one spec where newer brushless rivals beat it, and it weighs 3.6 lb with a battery fitted. Makita covers it for 3 years.

Bare tool or kit: the XOB01Z is sold as a bare tool. I couldn’t find a new kit version on Amazon US, so if you have no LXT batteries, add a battery and charger set or look at the DeWalt kit below.

The DeWalt DCW210 is one of the most widely sold cordless random orbital sanders in the US, and the easiest one to recommend to a first-time buyer. DeWalt lists a brushless motor and a variable-speed dial from 8,000 to 12,000 OPM, a low-profile body that keeps your hand close to the work, and an 8-hole hook-and-loop pad. It is a newer addition to this guide: I picked it from DeWalt’s published specs, not from long-term use.

The kit version, the DCW210D1, adds a 2.0Ah battery, a charger and a bag. A 2.0Ah pack is light but short-lived on a sander, so a second, bigger battery is the first upgrade to make.

Its VACLINK feature switches on Milwaukee’s M18 FUEL PACKOUT dust extractor wirelessly, and a removable edge guard protects walls and trim. Like the DeWalt, it is a newer pick based on the maker’s specs.

For a lower tier, Milwaukee’s older non-FUEL M18 sander, the 2648, runs 7,000 to 12,000 OPM on a 3/32″ orbit and Milwaukee quotes up to 35 minutes on an M18 XC3.0 pack. Both carry Milwaukee’s 5-year tool warranty.

The Bosch GEX18V-5N is the lightest brushless sander here at 2.4 lb bare, per Bosch. It runs 6,000 to 10,000 OPM on a 3/32″ orbit with soft start, constant speed under load and a vibration-damping element, and it takes either the dust bag or a vacuum hose. Since June 2023 Bosch covers its 18V cordless tools for 5 years. With a lower top speed than the DeWalt or Milwaukee, it is a finisher first. I chose it from Bosch’s spec sheet.

The Metabo HPT SV1813DA packs the features of a premium sander into a mid-tier price. Metabo HPT lists a brushless motor, six speed settings from 7,000 to 11,000 OPM, a 1/8″ orbit, an electric brake, a dust-sealed switch and 2.6 lb with the dust bag fitted. It accepts Metabo HPT 18V packs and the 18V/36V MultiVolt batteries, and the tool carries a 5-year warranty. This is another addition chosen from the maker’s spec sheet.

It is the Makita’s recipe, a 1/8″ orbit with stepped speeds, plus a brushless motor, and it ships with 1-1/2″ and 1-3/4″ vacuum adaptors.

Bare tool or kit: SV1813DAQ4 bare tool. I found no kit from Amazon itself, so pair it with a Metabo HPT battery and charger set if you are new to the platform.

Best for Ryobi ONE+ · Best Budget Pick

I used Ryobi’s ONE+ random orbit sander in its P411 form. It runs a single 10,000 OPM speed on a 5″ pad, which delivers a smooth, swirl-free finish on wood, paint and filler, and with a 4Ah battery mine ran 35 to 40 minutes. The lock-on button saves your hand on long sessions, and the hook-and-loop pad makes disc changes quick. The dust bag works, but a shop vac on the port does much better.

Ryobi has since discontinued the P411 and sells an updated 18V ONE+ 5″ Random Orbit Sander with the same 10,000 OPM, a 3/32″ orbit and what Ryobi says is 40% less vibration. Neither has variable speed. Ryobi covers it for 3 years; on Amazon, Ryobi tools come from third-party sellers.

Warranty is 3 years. It is a newer addition, chosen from Craftsman’s specs.

With no dial, control comes from the grit. V20 also has a 1/4-sheet and a detail sander, linked in the platform table.

Best Premium Cordless Sander

The Festool ETSC 2 125 is the finest cordless orbital sander I know, and the price says so. Festool lists a brushless EC-TEC motor, 6,000 to 10,000 RPM, a 3.5 mm sanding stroke, 2.65 lb and a pad brake. Its standout is the built-in LED ring around the pad, which Festool calls a first for a battery-powered one-handed sander. In practice that ring is more useful than it sounds: you catch swirl marks and missed spots while you are still sanding, not after the finish goes on.

It runs on Festool’s standard 18V batteries, the same packs as the rest of Festool’s 18V line. The Basic version on Amazon comes without battery or charger. Festool sells through authorized dealers; on Amazon the seller is Hartville Hardware, which is on Festool’s dealer list, and that matters for the warranty.

Best Cordless Sheet Sander

The low 8,000 setting is gentle enough for a last pass before paint or stain; the top speed is the fastest sheet sander here. It holds standard 1/4 sheets in a clamp, and DeWalt covers it for 3 years.

Best for Milwaukee M18

The Milwaukee 2649-20 runs 11,000 to 13,000 OPM on a 1/4-sheet pad and weighs 2.6 lb with a compact battery, according to Milwaukee. It is a brushed motor, but it carries the same 5-year tool warranty as Milwaukee’s other M18 tools. If your batteries are red, this is the sheet sander to pair with the 2837-20 above.

The Milwaukee 2531-20 is the most capable cordless detail sander I know of. Milwaukee lists a brushless M12 FUEL motor, variable speed from 4,000 to 14,000 OPM, 1.3 lb bare and a 5-year warranty. The small M12 battery keeps the tool light enough to hold at awkward angles for a long time, which is what detail work demands.

Best Budget Detail Sander

The Corner Cat is the cheapest way into cordless detail sanding if you already own Ryobi batteries. Ryobi rates it at 11,000 OPM with a 3-year warranty. Mine ran about 35 minutes per charge, it is light and easy to steer into tight spots, and the vacuum attachment makes hooking up a shop vac simple. The body is plastic throughout, which is fair at this price: it suits light finishing, not hard daily use.

A two-hand overmolded front handle keeps it steady on wide boards. I chose it from DeWalt’s specs.

A 3″ x 21″ belt is the most common size in hardware stores, so replacement belts are easy to find. On a sander this hungry, plan on a 5Ah or larger battery.

Best Budget Cordless Belt Sander

For years the Ryobi P450 was the only cordless belt sander I would recommend. Its brushless motor drives a 3″ x 18″ belt at up to 850 FPM, per Ryobi, the pommel handle adjusts to five positions, and the belt tracking is tool-free. I get about 30 minutes of continuous sanding per charge, so I keep a spare battery on the charger. It handles smoothing boards, cleaning up edges and stripping a manageable surface well; long, heavy stock removal is still a job for a corded machine or the DeWalt.
