Short on time? Of the 2 graco magnum x5 vs x7s on this list, this is the one I'd buy.
- Also recommended Graco Magnum X70.31 GPM, a 0.017 in. maximum tip and up to 100 ft of hose.
The Graco Magnum X5 vs X7 question comes down to a handful of numbers, because the two sprayers share most of their hardware. Both use a hardened stainless steel piston pump, both are rated at 3000 psi, both draw 9 A at 120 V and both ship with a 25 ft hose. The X7 adds flow (0.31 vs 0.27 GPM), a bigger maximum tip (0.017 vs 0.015 in.), a stronger motor (0.625 vs 0.5 HP), room for 100 ft of hose instead of 75 ft, and a cart frame in place of the X5’s compact stand. For one house, one fence and some trim, the X5 does the job. The X7 is for people who spray a lot, or who spray thick paint.
This page sets the two Graco models side by side using the specifications on Graco’s own product pages, then says who should buy which. I compared published specs; I did not run either sprayer myself. If you are still choosing between airless and other types, start with my list of the best airless paint sprayer options, which also covers handheld and cordless models.

Every figure comes from the Graco product pages for the Magnum X5 (part 262800) and X7 (part 262805). Graco does not state a warranty on either page, so the table says so. The tier shows where each sits relative to the other and to the rest of the airless market, and the Amazon button shows the live price.
What Actually Differs Between the Magnum X5 and X7
Flow Rate and Tip Size
Graco rates the X5 at 0.27 GPM and the X7 at 0.31 GPM, about 15% more paint per minute on the X7. The bigger change is the tip. The X5 accepts tips from 0.009 to 0.015 in.; the X7 goes to 0.017 in. A 0.015 in. tip passes thin and medium latex, stain and primer. A 0.017 in. tip passes more material per second, which suits thicker coatings and large flat surfaces where speed is the point. If you only ever spray ordinary interior latex, the extra 0.002 in. may never get used.
Motor Power
The X5 has a 0.5 HP (373 W) universal motor and the X7 a 0.625 HP (466 W) one. Both pull 9.0 A, so neither asks for more from a household circuit than the other, and Graco lists 2500 W as the minimum generator for both. The larger motor on the X7 matters most with a long hose or heavier material, where the pump has more to push against.
Hose Length
Both include a 1/4 in. by 25 ft DuraFlex hose. The difference is how far you can extend it: 75 ft maximum on the X5, 100 ft on the X7. A 25 ft hose is enough for a room or one side of a house. The longer limit is for a sprayer that stays put while you work along a fence line or around a large exterior.
Frame, Weight and Storage
This is the difference you feel before you spray. The X5 is a compact stand, 17 lb, about 18 in. tall, which fits in a closet or the back of a car. The X7 is a cart, 27 lb and 37 in. tall, with wheels and a pail hook for moving a 5 gallon container with the cart. Graco’s X5 page does not list a pail hook, though it does mention a power flush that connects to a garden hose. The cart rolls across a garage floor or a lawn easily, but it takes more room to store and to lift into a vehicle.
What Stays the Same
Much of the spec sheet is identical. Both have a hardened stainless steel piston pump with a stainless steel sleeve, a 3000 psi ceiling with adjustable pressure control, a 35 mesh stainless inlet strainer, a flexible suction tube that works with 1 or 5 gallon containers, the SG2 spray gun, a tip guard and the same included tip (Graco’s pages list it as a 515 in one place and a 209 in another, so check the tip in the box). Graco rates both for a recommended 125 gallons of annual usage, which is a useful reality check: neither is a contractor’s daily machine. Graco recommends the X5 for people who paint on a quarterly basis.

Best for Most Homeowners
The Graco Magnum X5 is the one I would send most people to. Graco rates it at 0.27 GPM and 3000 psi with a 0.015 in. maximum tip, a 0.5 HP, 373 W motor drawing 9 A, and a 1/4 in. by 25 ft DuraFlex hose that extends to 75 ft. At 17 lb on a stand only 17.9 in. tall it is the easier of the two to carry, store and load. Graco aims it at interior and exterior projects such as decks, siding, fences and small houses. The limits are the ones in the table: a smaller tip ceiling and a shorter maximum hose than the X7. Graco does not state a warranty on the product page.

Best for Large Exteriors and Thicker Paint
The Graco Magnum X7 is the larger step in the same line. Graco lists 0.31 GPM, 3000 psi and a 0.017 in. maximum tip, powered by a 0.625 HP, 466 W motor at 9 A. It includes the same 25 ft hose as the X5 and supports up to 100 ft. The cart weighs 27 lb and stands 37 in. tall, and Graco lists a pail hook for moving a 5 gallon container with the cart, plus a power flush adapter for a garden hose. It is aimed at DIY homeowners and handymen with interiors, houses, fences and decks. The extra capacity costs money and storage space, so it earns its place only if you will use the bigger tip or the longer hose.
How I Compared the Graco Magnum X5 and X7
I compared published specifications; I did not run either sprayer myself, so this page makes no claim about how they feel in use or how long they last. Every number comes from the Graco product page for that model, opened while writing. The criteria, in order:
- Flow rate and maximum tip size, because they decide how fast the sprayer covers and which coatings it can pass.
- Pressure and motor power, to see whether the extra money buys more than flow.
- Hose reach, because it sets how far you can work from one position.
- Weight, size and frame, because storage and carrying are daily costs for a homeowner.
I do not show star ratings or prices: prices change daily, so each model carries a tier and the Amazon button shows the live price.
Graco Magnum X5 or X7: Which Should You Buy?
Buy the X5 If
You paint a few rooms, a fence or a deck a year, you spray standard latex, stain or primer, and you need to store the sprayer in a small space. Everything that matters for those jobs, the pump, the 3000 psi ceiling and the 25 ft hose, is the same on the X7, so you are not giving up core capability. Add hose later if you need it, up to 75 ft.
Buy the X7 If
You regularly spray whole exteriors, long fence lines, or paints that are thick enough to want a 0.017 in. tip. The 100 ft maximum hose and the cart also suit a job where you set up once in a driveway or garage and work outwards. If you will use it only a few days a year, the X5 gives you most of the benefit for less.
Consider Something Else If
Your work is mostly doors, cabinets or furniture. Airless pushes out a lot of paint quickly, and fine finishes usually go better with HVLP; see my guide to HVLP vs airless vs LVLP and the best paint sprayer for cabinets. If you will spray dozens of gallons every week, remember that Graco rates both models for about 125 gallons a year, and look at a heavier-duty sprayer. For small jobs of 2 gallons or less, a handheld unit may be all you need, and the airless guide compares one.
