Short on time? Of the 6 airless paint sprayers on this list for walls, fences and trim, this is the one I'd buy.
- Also recommended Graco TrueCoat 360
- Also recommended Graco Magnum X7
An airless paint sprayer pumps paint at high pressure through a small tip, which breaks it into a fine fan without needing an air compressor or a turbine. For most homeowners, the best airless paint sprayer is the Graco Magnum X5: 0.27 GPM, a 0.015 in. maximum tip, 3000 psi and a 25 ft hose, enough to paint a whole room, a fence or a set of doors in one session.
Below are six airless sprayers from Graco, Wagner and Titan, a comparison table, short reviews and a guide to the numbers that decide a purchase: GPM, maximum tip size, pressure, power, hose length and pump type. If you want a handheld airless sprayer for small jobs, there is a section for that too. Painting cabinets or furniture with a fine finish? Read my picks for the best paint sprayer for cabinets first, because an HVLP unit often suits that job better.

What an Airless Paint Sprayer Does and When to Use One
An airless sprayer needs no air hose or compressor. A pump pushes paint through a tip at high pressure, and the size of the tip hole sets how much paint leaves per minute and how wide the fan is. That makes it fast on big flat areas: walls, ceilings, fences, decks and exterior siding. A room that takes an afternoon with a roller can be sprayed in a fraction of the time, though masking and prep take longer than the spraying itself.
Airless vs HVLP
HVLP sprayers use a high volume of air at low pressure to atomize thin coatings, which gives a finer finish and less bounce-back on small pieces. Airless moves more paint and handles thicker, unthinned latex that HVLP struggles with. My guide to HVLP vs airless vs LVLP sets out which one fits which job, and if furniture or trim is your main project, start with the best HVLP sprayer list instead.
Where Airless Falls Short
Airless puts out a lot of paint quickly, so on small, detailed work such as cabinet doors it is easy to apply too much, and the cleanup is longer than for a roller. It also needs a tip guard and careful handling, because the paint leaves the tip at pressure. Read the safety section of your sprayer’s manual before the first spray, and see my guide on how to use a paint sprayer for the basics of technique.

Best Airless Paint Sprayer Overall
The Graco Magnum X5 is the sprayer I would send most people to because it asks for little and covers a lot. Graco rates it at 0.27 GPM and 3000 psi with a 0.015 in. maximum tip, which handles ordinary interior latex, exterior paint and stain. The pump is a hardened stainless steel piston pump, the design Graco uses across its Magnum line, driven by a 0.5 HP, 373 W motor that draws 9 A at 120 V. The 1/4 in. by 25 ft DuraFlex hose is enough for a room or a side of a house, and Graco lists a maximum of 75 ft if you add hose. The suction tube is flexible so it can draw from a 1 or 5 gallon container. Graco’s page names two different included tips in two places (a 515 in one list, a 209 in another), so check what is in the box when it arrives.

Best Handheld Airless Paint Sprayer
Graco positions the TrueCoat 360 Variable Speed for paint and stain projects of 2 gallons or less: doors, trim, interior walls, outdoor furniture, garage doors and fences. It is a corded, handheld airless unit, so there is no hose and no stand. A 1 to 10 pace dial sets how fast paint is delivered, which helps when you move from a wide wall to narrow trim. The paint sits in 32 oz FlexLiner bags (four are included) and the system keeps working when you tilt the sprayer, so it will spray upward or sideways without losing prime. Graco does not publish flow, pressure or tip size on this page, so those fields stay blank here; the Amazon listing names a stainless steel piston pump. Think of it as the step up from a roller for a weekend of small jobs, not as a replacement for a cart or stand sprayer.

Best Lowest-Effort Setup
The Wagner Control Pro 130 works differently from the stand-mounted sprayers on this list: paint goes into a 1.5 gallon tank that sits on the unit, so you skip the suction tube and the bucket. It uses Wagner’s High Efficiency Airless (HEA) design, which the company says reduces overspray by up to 55% compared with standard airless. The Amazon kit lists a 413 tip for stains and a 515 tip for latex, with a 25 ft hose, and Wagner sells a 50 ft hose separately. What it does not do is publish its numbers: the Wagner page gives no flow rate, maximum tip, pressure or motor power, so I have not put any in the table. If you shop on those figures, the Graco and Titan models above give you more to compare. If you shop on convenience, the tank is the point.

Best for Flow Rate
On paper the Titan ControlMax 1700 moves the most paint of the corded models in this list: 0.33 GPM through a tip up to 0.017 in., driven by a 0.60 HP pump. Titan quotes a maximum operating pressure of 1500 psi, half the Graco figure. Titan says its HEA design cuts overspray by up to 55% and gives a softer spray, so the lower number is not a flaw in itself. It comes with a 30 ft hose and what Titan calls the industry’s longest warranty at two years. Titan does not state the weight or the pump construction, so I cannot tell you more than that on either.

Best for Big Exteriors
The Graco Magnum X7 is the larger sibling of the X5 and suits people who regularly spray whole exteriors. For the full side-by-side, read my Graco Magnum X5 vs X7 comparison. Graco lists 0.31 GPM, 3000 psi and a 0.017 in. maximum tip, powered by a 466 W, 0.625 HP motor drawing 9 A. It includes a 1/4 in. by 25 ft hose and supports up to 100 ft, so one set-up spot can reach a long fence line or the far side of a house. A detailed X5 vs X7 breakdown deserves its own page, so here the short rule is enough: buy the X7 if you need the longer hose or the bigger tip, and the X5 if you do not.

Best Cordless Airless Paint Sprayer
The Titan ControlMax 1650 runs on 18V AmpShare batteries, two 2Ah packs in the box, with a charger that accepts up to 8Ah. Titan lists 0.24 GPM, a 0.015 in. maximum tip and a 0.52 HP motor. The sprayer sits in a backpack-style frame with a 1.25 gallon hopper and a short 9 ft hose with a swivel and on-board hose management. It is the most flexible machine here for places without power, and the least efficient value if you have an outlet. Titan does not publish a pressure figure or warranty terms on its page.
How I Chose These Airless Paint Sprayers
I compared published specifications; I did not run these sprayers myself. I looked only at airless sprayers from established makers, on sale on Amazon today, with a product page on the maker’s own site. The criteria, in order:
- Flow rate (GPM) and maximum tip size, because they set how fast a sprayer covers and which coatings it can pass.
- Maximum pressure and motor power, taken from the maker. Where the page was silent, I wrote “Not stated” instead of borrowing a retailer’s number.
- Hose length and pump type, because they decide how far you can work from the unit and how long the pump is likely to last.
- A format that fits the job: stand, cart, handheld, gravity tank and cordless are all represented.
I left out unbranded sprayers with no maker specifications and kits sold mostly as accessories. I do not show star ratings or prices: prices change daily, so each pick carries a tier and the Amazon button shows the live price.
How to Choose an Airless Paint Sprayer
Flow Rate (GPM)
GPM is gallons per minute at the pump: the higher it is, the more paint reaches the wall each minute and the faster the job goes. Among the sprayers with a published figure, the Titan ControlMax 1700 leads at 0.33 GPM, then the Graco Magnum X7 at 0.31, the X5 at 0.27 and the Titan ControlMax 1650 at 0.24. The tip you fit then caps what actually leaves the gun, so a high GPM only helps if the tip is big enough to use it.
Maximum Tip Size
The tip is a replaceable nozzle. In the common numbering system, the last two digits give the hole size in thousandths of an inch and the first digit, doubled, gives the fan width in inches, so a 515 tip has a 0.015 in. hole and a fan about 10 in. wide when you hold the gun at the recommended distance. The X5 and the ControlMax 1650 stop at 0.015 in., which suits thin and medium latex, stain and primer. The X7 and ControlMax 1700 accept 0.017 in., a better match for thicker coatings. Match the tip to the paint maker’s recommendation.
Pressure and Power
Maximum pressure is the ceiling, not the working setting. Graco quotes 3000 psi for the X5 and X7, Titan 1500 psi for the ControlMax 1700, and a lower pressure is not a weakness when the tip is built to atomize softly. Motor power (HP or watts) matters more when you run long hoses or thick material. For cordless units, battery size sets how many gallons you get per charge, so keep a second pack charged.
Hose Length
Most of these sprayers include 25 to 30 ft. That is plenty for one room or one side of a house. A longer hose lets the sprayer stay in one place while you work, which is the reason to look at the X7’s 100 ft maximum or the X5’s 75 ft. A short hose, like the 9 ft on the cordless Titan, only works because the unit rides on your back.
Pump Type
Both Graco Magnum sprayers use a hardened stainless steel piston pump. A piston pump pushes paint through the system in strokes and is the design most DIY and contractor sprayers rely on. Wagner and Titan do not specify the pump construction on the pages I read, so I can only name it where the maker did.
Handheld Airless Paint Sprayers: Are They Worth It?
The search for a handheld airless paint sprayer usually means one thing: a sprayer small enough to hold in one hand, with the paint in a cup or bag on the body. The Graco TrueCoat 360 is the only true handheld on my list, and Graco itself rates it for projects of 2 gallons or less.
When a Handheld Makes Sense
Choose a handheld when the job is a door, a set of shutters, a piece of outdoor furniture or a single bedroom. The sprayer is quick to set up, there is no hose to drag across a finished floor and cleanup involves less equipment.
When to Buy a Stand or Cart Sprayer
Move up to the X5 or a ControlMax when the job needs more than a few gallons: whole-house interiors, fences, decks or siding. A stand sprayer draws from a one or five gallon container, so you stop refilling a 32 oz bag every few minutes. Painting furniture or cabinets with a fine finish is a different case: compare the cabinet sprayers and the guide to the best paint for cabinets before choosing airless.
