Best Shop Air Filtration System Reviews

Let’s take a more in-depth look at each of the shop air filtration systems so you know exactly what they have to offer.

WEN 3410 3-Speed Remote-Controlled Air Filtration System (300/350/400 CFM)

Known for their great budget machines, WEN delivers yet again another solid product a a super cheap price. It’s simple, weighs just 31 pounds and can’t take on large rooms but if you’ve got a smaller shop (400 square foot) and want a little help clearing the air from dust and other debris without breaking the bank, this is a good choice. It’s fairly well built and has hooks for a ceiling mount as well as a carrying handle, which is always useful. The control panel is easy to use as well as being remote-controlled (up to 26 feet away) and you can set the filter on a timer and switch speeds (from 300 to 400). It features a 5 micron external filter with a 1 micron internal filter – the classic combo – ensuring the air is nice and breathable. The filters are easy to change when needed and the 1/6 HP motor is competent enough to keep things moving (although it can be slightly loud). With a very affordable price tag behind it, it’s a solid choice for beginners and small shops alike.

Shop Fox W1830 3-Speed Hanging Air Filter

Shop Fox’s competitor to the WEN model shown previously, the W1830 has an extremely similar design, feature set and price although the motor and speed are slightly different. While the build quality in both materials and design are the same (good for the price), the motor behind it is a little less powerful. Even then, it manages to surpass the WEN’s suction capacity by a small amount, delivering 260, 362, and 409 CFM. Apart from that, the features are all the same (ceiling mount hooks and carrying handle, control panel with 3 speeds and timer, remote control up to 26 feet) and even the weight is equal – 31 pounds. If you like WEN’s model but prefer the Shop Fox brand, this is the one for you.

Rikon Air Filtration 400

Yet another competitor for the entry-level market, Rikon’s model 400 shop air filtration system is, as you’ve probably guessed, nearly equal to the 2 other models above. The build quality, the design, the power, the control panel and even the price are all identical, making it a matter of which one you like the best in terms of looks and price (which one is on promotion at the time). Even then, Rikon has an ace up its sleeve in comparison to the other two – it comes with a 5 year warranty. Apart from that, it has a 1/6 HP motor and puts out a variable CFM of 300/350/400, as well as having timer capabilities and being remote controlled. Just like the other two shown above, it’s a good, inexpensive air filtration system for either beginners or small shops.

POWERTEC AF1044 3SPD Air Filtration System, 550/702/1044-CFM

Powertec’s AF1044 is a step up in terms of quality and power, making it able to take on larger shops. It’s durable and well-built, showing no signs of imperfection, as well as featuring strong ceiling hooks for easy and secure installation (which is needed for larger models like this). It weighs 68 pounds due to its larger size and more potent motor (1/5 HP), but in return you get a great suction capacity of 550/702/1044 CFM. It has two filter walls – 5 microns on the outside and 1 micron on the inside – and the control panel is the standard issue, giving you 3 speeds and 3 timer options while also offering remote control. The price is affordable for this level of power, but you only get 1 year of warranty (as opposed to the competing JET unit we’ll see below which offers 5).

JET 708620B AFS-1000B 550/702/1044 CFM 3-Speed Air Filtration System with Remote and Electrostatic Pre-Filter

Finally, we reach the JET AFS-1000B, my all-time favorite shop air filtration system. It’s stunningly well-built, durable, powerful and best of all – attractively priced. Featuring a potent 1/5 HP motor that puts out up to 1044 CFM (3 speeds available), it ensures your shop’s air stays clear even if the room’s fairly large. The two filtering walls (5 micron and 1 micron), keeps both dust and debris trapped and the effective remote control allows you to easily program it any way you want with ease (3 speeds and 3 timer options available). The sturdy hooks make installing it on your ceiling a breeze and the side handles allow you to carry it smoothly as well. JET’s trademark attention to detail makes the system not only look great but perform even better and the most amazing part of all is that it’s incredibly affordable, especially for a JET unit, which makes it an excellent choice for any budget or shop size. On top of all, it also comes with a long, 5 year warranty for extra peace of mind. It is, in my opinion, one of the best shop air filtration systems you can get.

WEN 3415 3-Speed Remote-Controlled Industrial-Strength Air Filtration System (556/702/1044 CFM)

The 3415 is WEN’s competitor to the incredible JET AFS, and it does a solid job on delivering a similar experience. The power, speed and filtration capacity are the same, as well as the features on both the design and control panel, with the main difference going to the finishing quality and the price. The WEN lacks a bit of the polish and attention to detail that the JET offers and it’s also a bit pricier, which is unusual. The warranty is also shorter (1 year). All things considered, it’s still a great choice all-around.

Grizzly G9956 Heavy-Duty Double Air Filter with Remote Control

Moving on to industrial, heavy-duty units, the Grizzly G9956 features awesome power and great construction quality as well as delivering modern features and top-notch double air-filtering. It’s solidly built and very durable as well as being larger than the previous units, as expected, and weighing 77 pounds. The outstandingly powerful 1/3 HP motor gives it enough power to draw 1400 CFM, ensuring your shop’s air stays crystal clear no matter how large or busy it is. The 5 and 1 micron filter walls work flawlessly to capture even fine dust and the filter bag inside makes cleaning a breeze. It can be mounted on the ceiling by using its strong hooks and if you want to move it around, you also have handy handles on the side to facilitate transportation. The remote control is excellent, allowing you to change its speed and set timers from as far as 45 feet away. The only drawback I’ve noticed is that some units can come with a few small dents but that can easily be resolved through customer support (they’ll replace it for free). It also comes with 1 year of warranty and has a fair price, making it a great choice for large, professional shops.

Jet 708615 AFS-2000 800/1200/1700 CFM 3 Speed Air Filtration System

The classic choice for large, professional shops, the beastly powerful JET AFS-2000 is one of the best shop air filtration systems I’ve ever had. It’s widely considered to be the best air filtration system for woodworking professionals and I can’t help but to agree completely. From its stunning construction quality to the smart design, modern features and outstanding filtering capacity, it blows you away with its performance all while looking good. It has a super potent 1/3 HP motor that puts out an unbelievable 1700 CFM, ensuring that no matter how large your shop is, it’ll get perfectly clear and breathable air. The 5 and 1 micron filter walls gather all the dust and debris, even the finest, and it’s extremely easy to clean them whenever it’s needed (no tools required). It weighs 121 pounds and can be safely mounted to the ceiling with its steel hooks and no matter how high or far it is, you can always smoothly control it with the remote (3 speeds and 3 timers). On top of all of this, the construction quality and design are excellent which makes its performance smooth and effective while also ensuring a long life. With a 5 year warranty and a fantastic price to boot, it’s in my opinion the very best shop air filtration system you can get if you’ve got a large room and need heavy-duty performance.

  1. Hello, this might seem like a silly question, but would one these be suitable for a DIY laser fume extractor…that is if I were to create the coupling myself (3D print them out), would this type of unit move enough air and filter out the toxic particles? maybe I could add a sheet of activated charcoal?
    thx!

    • Hey Nic – that’s actually a great question! When it comes to moving enough air, it’s an absolute yes. Especially with a coupling, you’d have no problems pushing the fumes out. When it comes to the particle filtering though, you’d need a lot of charcoal in an enclosed stationary structure for it to be effective (I saw some builds where you need around 55 lb of charcoal). Due to this, I’d recommend that you simply direct the fumes to the outside through a PVC pipe, if possible. Hope that helps!

  2. I’m considering the Grizzly machine, but their website says that replacement internal pocket filters are “discontinued” and several third party sites have them on “extended no ETA backorder”.

Is it possible this machine is no longer being supported? Or do you have a source for replacement parts?

    • Hey Josh, I’ve noticed it too. Maybe they’re prepping up for a machine update or are simply out of stock at the moment (the discontinued sign is weird though). Either way, the filters are still easily acquired online, through Amazon for example, if you ever need them. Just search for “Grizzly H2451 1-Micron Washable Secondary Filter”. Hope that helps and have yourself a great day!

  3. Trying to decide on size of air cleaner required. I have a 30×40 (10 ft ceiling) shop for personal use. Would the Jet AFS-1000B do the job?

    • Hey John – it would certainly do the job on your shop although it depends on a few things which I’ll now go into. On the “standard” testing room of 20′ x 20′ x 8′ the AFS-1000B manages to perform 19.58 cycles per hour (which is great) so even though it would clock out fewer in your larger shop, it would still be able to clear it several times per hour. If you’ve already got a shop vac for your tools and just need crystal clear, breathable air to boot, then the AFS-1000B is a fantastic choice. If you don’t have a shop vac and the Air Filtration System will be your only dust collecting machine running, then I’d definitely go for the Jet AFS-2000 instead. As always, make sure to regularly clean the filters and enjoy the fresh new atmosphere – it makes wood working that much safer and comfortable. Hope that helps!

      • Thanks for the response James…….didn’t see your reply until now. Yes, I plan on having point of use dust collection. The intent of the air cleaner would be to get the fine particles out of the air. Do you have any experience with SuperMax air cleaners? Had somebody today recommend the 1.5hp unit over the Jet.

        • Actually, I mean’t 1/5 hp. Model is the 810650. The guy I spoke with recommended installing 2 of the SuperMax units

          • Hey again John,
I’ve had a great experience with most SuperMax machines – especially their drum sanders – but when it comes to the air filtration unit I wasn’t very impressed, hence its absence from my list. It can be because I’ve been spoiled already with the excellent competition but the SuperMax model just didn’t quite make the cut in both performance and features, even though it’s attractively priced. Instead, I’d go double JET AFS-1000B or a single Grizzly G9956/Jet AFS-2000. Hope that helps John and as always, have an excellent day!

  4. Do these filters run all the time or just on command?

    • Hey Jon – it differs from model to model but they nearly always run on command. You can program them to run for a set amount of time – 1 hour, 2 hours, etc… – or simply turn them on indefinitely and then shut them off when you want. Thanks for stopping by!

      • Thanks James

      • Timothy Bermond

I have a 480 sq ft shop with 10 ft ceilings. Actually, it’s a two car garage. I’m trying to determine whether I should purchase the WEN 3410 or the Jet AFS-1000. I’m sure both would do fine but I can’t make a decision on either system. If I buy the WEN, it may do the job but in a year or two, I don’t want to say, “I wish I bought the JET.” Or if I’d bought the JET, I don’t want to say, “I really spent way too much money for this unit. I should’ve bought the WEN”. Price would be the determining factor but I want to be sure the WEN will effectively help with dust. Also, the only other air filtration I have is a 6.5 HP Ridgid vac that I don’t always run when I use my table saw. Thanks for any help.

        • Hey Tim – taking into consideration your space’s details, I’d go with the WEN if you’ll only ever work in that 480 sq 10ft ceiling room. If that’s the case, the WEN is a great fit. If you’re considering moving out to a larger space one day though, I’d get the JET right now as it’ll future proof you, even if you move to a larger room. Just my 2 cents – hope that helps and have a great weekend!
